White blood cells, also called leukocytes or leucocytes, are cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders. White blood cells include three main subtypes; granulocytes, lymphocytes and monocytes. All white blood cells are produced and derived from multipotent cells in the bone marrow known as hematopoietic stem cells.[2] Leukocytes are found throughout the body, including the blood and lymphatic system.[3] All white blood cells have nuclei, which distinguishes them from the other blood cells, the anucleated red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets. The different white blood cells are usually classified by cell lineage (myeloid cells or lymphoid cells). White blood cells are part of the body's immune system. They help the body fight infection and other diseases. Types of white blood cells are granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils), and agranulocytes (monocytes, and lymphocytes (T cells and B cells)).[4] Myeloid cells (myelocytes) include neutrophils, eosinophils, mast cells, basophils, and monocytes.[5] Monocytes are further subdivided into dendritic cells and macrophages. Monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils are phagocytic. Lymphoid cells (lymphocytes) include T cells (subdivided into helper T cells, memory T cells, cytotoxic T cells), B cells (subdivided into plasma cells and memory B cells), and natural killer cells. Historically, white blood cells were classified by their physical characteristics (granulocytes and agranulocytes), but this classification system is less frequently used now. Produced in the bone marrow, white blood cells defend the body against infections and disease. An excess of white blood cells is usually due to infection or inflammation. Less commonly, a high white blood cell count could indicate certain blood cancers or bone marrow disorders.

NORMAL LEVELS OF WBC: What is the normal range of WBC count in male and female? I White Blood Cells The normal number of WBCs in the blood is 4,500 to 11,000 WBCs per microliter (4.5 to 11.0 × 109/L). Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different labs. Some labs use different measurements or may test different specimens. Talk to your provider about your test results. What is considered a high white blood cell count? In general, for adults a count of more than 11,000 white blood cells (leukocytes) in a microliter of blood is considered a high white blood cell count. What is the most common reason for low white blood cell count? A low white blood cell count usually is caused by: Viral infections that temporarily disrupt the work of bone marrow. Certain disorders present at birth (congenital) that involve diminished bone marrow function. Cancer or other diseases that damage bone marrow The following conditions can cause white blood cell counts to be high: Viral or bacterial infection. Inflammation. Excessive physical or emotional stress (such as fever, injury, or surgery) Burns. Immune system disorders such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Thyroid problems How long does it take for WBC to return to normal? The white blood cell count will typically return to normal around four-weeks after delivery. Is low white blood count serious? A low WBC count can be serious because it increases your risk of developing a potentially life-threatening infection. Seek prompt medical care if you have a low WBC count and have signs of an infection, such as a fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, or skin lesions. Do low white blood cells make you tired? Leukopenia is a low white blood cell count. In itself, it doesn't usually produce fatigue. White blood cells are the body's Armed Forces, keeping infections from occurring. A low count can lead to repeated infections. What increases white blood cells? Most people turn to vitamin C after they've caught a cold. That's because it helps build up your immune system. Vitamin C is thought to increase the production of white blood cells. These are key to fighting infections. Leukocytosis refers to an increase in the total number of white blood cells (WBCs) due to any cause. From a practical standpoint, leukocytosis is traditionally classified according to the component of white cells that contribute to an increase in the total number of WBCs. What causes leukocytosis? Leukocytosis is usually a response to an infection or inflammation, so it's not a cause for alarm. However, it can be caused by serious diseases such as leukemia and other cancers, so it's important that your doctor diagnosis the cause of an increased WBC when it's found. What are the signs and symptoms of leukocytosis? Fever. Bleeding or bruising. Feeling weak, tired, or sick. Feeling dizzy, faint, or sweaty. Pain or tingling in your arms, legs, or abdomen. Trouble breathing, thinking, or seeing. Losing weight without trying, or a poor appetite. What happens if leukocytes are high? Higher levels of leukocytes in the bloodstream may indicate an infection. This is because WBCs are part of the immune system, and they help fight off disease and infection. Leukocytes may also be found in a urinalysis, or a urine test. High levels of WBCs in your urine also suggest that you have an infection. Is leukocytosis a sign of leukemia? Excessive numbers of white blood cells are most often due to the response of normal bone marrow to infection or inflammation. In some instances, leukocytosis is a sign of more serious primary bone marrow disease (leukemias or myeloproliferative disorders). When should I worry about high white blood cell count? A high white blood cell count may indicate that the immune system is working to destroy an infection. It may also be a sign of physical or emotional stress. People with particular blood cancers may also have high white blood cells counts. How can I reduce my leukocyte count? Avoid foods rich in sugar, fat and salt. A low white blood cell count (leukopenia) is a decrease in disease-fighting cells (leukocytes) in your blood. Leukopenia is almost always related to a decrease in a certain type of white blood cell (neutrophil). Is leukopenia a cancer? Conditions that may cause leukopenia Blood cell and bone marrow conditions: These can lead to leukopenia. Examples include aplastic anemia, overactive spleen, and myelodysplastic syndromes. Cancer: Leukemia and other cancers may damage the bone marrow and lead to leukopenia. What are the signs and symptoms of leukopenia? Many people with leukopenia have no symptoms. In severe cases, symptoms include infection, chills, fever above 100.4 degrees and sweating. ^$½£ #whatis #health #medical #what #healthy #doctor #medicaldoctor #medicine #disease #medicalvideos #hematology #whiteblood #bloodcount #labresults #medicalstudent

. Chapters 0:00 Introduction 0:14 Symptoms of Leukocytosis 0: 48 Causes of Leukocytosis 1:13 Diagnosis of Leukocytosis 2:28 Treatment of Leukocytosis Leukocytosis is a condition in which the white cell (leukocyte count) is above the normal range in the blood.[1][2] It is frequently a sign of an inflammatory response,[3] most commonly the result of infection, but may also occur following certain parasitic infections or bone tumors as well as leukemia. It may also occur after strenuous exercise, convulsions such as epilepsy, emotional stress, pregnancy and labor, anesthesia, as a side effect of medication (e.g., lithium), and epinephrine administration.[1] There are five principal types of leukocytosis:[4] Neutrophilia (the most common form)[5] Lymphocytosis Monocytosis Eosinophilia Basophilia This increase in leukocyte (primarily neutrophils) is usually accompanied by a "left upper shift" in the ratio of immature to mature neutrophils and macrophages. The proportion of immature leukocytes increases due to proliferation and inhibition of granulocyte and monocyte precursors in the bone marrow which is stimulated by several products of inflammation including C3a and G-CSF. Although it may indicate illness, leukocytosis is considered a laboratory finding instead of a separate disease. This classification is similar to that of fever, which is also a test result instead of a disease.[citation needed] "Right shift" in the ratio of immature to mature neutrophils is considered with reduced count or lack of "young neutrophils" (metamyelocytes, and band neutrophils) in blood smear, associated with the presence of "giant neutrophils". This fact shows suppression of bone marrow activity, as a hematological sign specific for pernicious anemia and radiation sickness.[6] A leukocyte count above 25 to 30 × 109/L is termed a leukemoid reaction, which is the reaction of a healthy bone marrow to extreme stress, trauma, or infection. It is different from leukemia and from leukoerythroblastosis, in which either immature white blood cells (acute leukemia) or mature, yet non-functional, white blood cells (chronic leukemia) are present in peripheral blood.[citation needed]

The white blood cells are an important part of our body's immune system. Neutrophils are a special group of white blood cells that play an extremely important role in protecting the body against infections. Mature neutrophils do not divide. New neutrophils are constantly formed in the bone marrow where they develop and mature. Mature neutrophils are released into the blood where they circulate for 3 to 12 hours and then move to other tissues, where they survive only 2 to 3 days. These mature neutrophils can be found in large and small blood vessels, as well as in the tiny capillaries in different tissues. In the bloodstream, neutrophils act as surveillance cells searching for infections. Neutrophils can sense a site of infection because of chemicals that are released by the bacteria. Upon detecting these chemicals, neutrophils slow down and begin to stick to the walls of the blood vessel. They then squeeze between the cells of the blood vessel wall and enter the infected tissue. Here, the neutrophils crawl towards the infection as they continue following the chemical signals. At the site of infection, bacteria are coated with antibodies of the immune system and marked for ingestion. The neutrophil recognizes the marked bacterium, engulfs it into its body, ... And traps the bacterium in a sac called a phagosome. The neutrophil contains pouches called lysosomes, which are full of digestive enzymes and chemicals that can kill bacteria. The pouches or lysosomes then combine with the phagosomes containing the bacteria and release the enzymes and chemicals, ... Resulting in the ultimate death of the bacterium inside the neutrophil. After killing and digesting the bacteria, the neutrophil is spent. Having completed its duty, the neutrophil shrinks in size and breaks up into smaller pieces that can be recognized and eaten by other cells.

This is our immune system’s first line of defense (neutrophils) racing to the site of injury - they are the first guys at the scene of nearly every crime that occurs inside our body! Enter this time-lapse light microscopy footage of white blood cells migrating to the surrounding tissue from the bloodstream. This is known as extravasation (or diapedesis) and is a response by the body to tissue damage or infection. These neutrophils are part of the innate (non-specific) immune system response. This rapid migration from the blood to site of infections is critical for pathogen elimination & tissue repair. This inflammatory response is an attempt by the body to restore & maintain homeostasis after injury & is an integral part of body defense. Most of the body defense elements are located in the blood & inflammation is the means by which body defense cells & defense chemicals leave the blood & enter the tissue around the injured or infected site. Inflammation is essentially beneficial, however, excess or prolonged inflammation can cause harm - tissue damage during hyper-inflammatory disorders, including acute injuries, pneumonia, severe flu, sepsis, accidentally inhaling vomit, smoke or toxic chemicals, acute pancreatitis etc.), multiple organ failure syndrome, vascular inflammation, or arthritis are all examples of how inflammation can also cause wreak havoc on our body.
