Learning how to confidently make cold process soap was a game changer for me and our homestead. Not only was I able to reduce the cost of our family's expenses by buying organic soap but I also now had a product to sell and also a skill to teach. Firstly don't be put off by the fear of using caustic soda (also known as lye). Yes it's corrosive and can be dangerous to use but only if you're not following simple safety techniques. List of equipment (I didn't use all of this in my video but most of it comes in use when you start soapmaking). 2 food thermometers 2 pyrex or heatproof jugs (not metal) 2 spatulas and spoons for stirring Empty jam jar with lid Rubber gloves Face mask Protective eye goggles Silicone molds Stick blender Ingredients 234g Water 115g Caustic Soda (sodium hydroxide) 900g Extra Virgin Olive Oil* *Needs to be measured by weight and not measured in milliliters. Also do not try to use 'light' olive oil or substitute with any other oil as this will alter the soap and likely ruin the results. If this recipe is too big and you don't have a large enough pyrex jug you can halve the recipe. The reason I add the caustic soda to a jam jar first is so that I never accidentally pour the water into the lye (you must always pour the lye into the water). When you mix the caustic soda with the water try not to inhale the gases as they are very unpleasant (wearing a face mask is essential). Cover your benchtops with paper if you are worried about spilling the corrosive lye onto it (mine is a stone benchtop and is quite resistant to damage if I clean up splashes immediately). The soaps at the start of the video are all variations on this recipe. Some have Himalayan soap in them, others have dried herbs and flowers. Once you're confident in making this recipe you can play around with additives & essential oils to make interesting colours and lovely smells. Once your soaps have cured for 4 weeks they can be used and stored as you would a store bought soap. They last for years and make great presents for friends and family. *Safety tips (please read carefully before attempting to make cold process soap)* This is not safe for children to make, adult supervision is essential. Never ever touch lye solution with your bare hands, it will burn. If you do get some on your skin, run under cold water for at least 10 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately if you get any lye solution in your eyes. Do not leave your lye solution to cool where a child or pet could access it. 🤍riverbellcottage.com #coldprocesssoap #soapmaking #soapmakingforbeginners #oliveoil #soap #homediy #toxicfree #soaptutorial #homesteading #smallbusinessideas
In this video I show you how to make homemade lemon turmeric soap. Thank you for watching❣️ 🟢Learn to formulate your own soap recipes here: 🤍 🟢Etsy shop: 🤍 🟢Citric acid information: When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap. A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water. These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap. A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases. Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level. How much citric acid should be added to soap? Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight. How to use citric acid Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils. If you want to customize soap down to the last ingredient, cold process is a great option. Cold process soap is made by combining oils and sodium hydroxide lye. That causes a chemical reaction called saponification. Melt and pour soap has already gone through that process. Once you find your perfect recipe you can start getting creative with the designs. You get to choose the oils, colorants, scents, and more. In this video, we go over the basic tools and ingredients you need to get started. Join me in donating to #TeamSeas here! 🤍 Check out our new merch here! 🤍 The Franken-soap giveaway is now closed & the winners will be contacted in the next few days! Thanks to all who entered! HELLO FRIENDS!! Here is a weird video we made where I melted every soap from Lush together into a few different batches of franken-soap!! This type of franken-experiment has worked well in the past across a wide array of products like lipsticks, foundations, candles, and bath bombs (also from Lush!) - and as some of you may know, over the years I have developed a bit of a soap fixation, having recreated a couple different soap art tutorials, as well as several bizarre soap art hacks from the internet. So I was excited to combine these two interests together by mixing every single soap from a single store to see what kind of soap bar we could whip up. What did you think of our final product?? Thanks to Anne-Marie at Bramble Berry and Katie at Royalty Soaps! You can check out their channels here - Bramble Berry: 🤍 Royalty Soaps: 🤍 And you can check out Elly's Everyday Soap Making's Rebatching video here! 🤍 Just a heads up - any footage of me w/o a mask in Lush is either from our old video (pre-quarantine), or from when we filmed in Lush this past summer with special permission before the store opened! This video is NOT sponsored, but thanks to Lush for letting us film at your store! Formulating your own cold process soap recipes is easy! In this video, Bramble Berry CEO and Founder, Anne-Marie Faiola, goes over the basics of formulating cold process soap recipes. To create your own recipe, start by choosing your base oils. You can use each one around 20-30%. For the remaining portion, consider what you’d like the bar to feel like. Do you want it to be super moisturizing, have a nice thick lather, or to be hard and long lasting? How you want your soap to feel and look will guide you in choosing your oils. You can never go wrong with a 34/33/33 ratio. That’s 34% olive oil, 33% coconut oil, and 33% palm oil. They’re commonly used because they complement each other well. Palm oil acts as a secondary lathering agent and hardens the soap, coconut oil is cleansing and produces big bubbles, and olive oil is moisturizing and gives bars a silky feeling. Hello again everyone. Today I’ll be making my favourite chocolate liquid soap, using 20% organic unrefined cocoa butter for its chocolatey aroma goodness and amazing skin benefits. This is a fairly new recipe & I love it. 😊 If you have never made soap before please watch videos on handling lye, lye safety & beginner tutorials on soap making. I recommend watching the following; Anne-Marie the soap queen from brambleberry; 🤍 (Lye safety & ingredients) Jackie Thompson Soaping101; 🤍 (Liquid Soap Making How to) Elly from Elly’s Everyday Soap Making; 🤍 (Liquid Soap Making Tutorial) I use LyeCalc to formulate all my recipes. It is my favourite as you can adjust lye purity; 🤍 I always recommend running a recipe through a Lye calculator to be safe. I will now be giving recipe information using percentages of the oil amount, which includes all the additives. This is to encourage new soap makers to familiarise themselves with using a lye calculator and having a better understanding of formulating a recipe Names of where I obtained my ingredients from & Recipe Information; Yields over 14kg of Chocolate Liquid Soap Percentage of 2000g oil batch; Pot Phase; 50% - Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (Hello Pure) 20% - Australian Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Olive Oil (Range Products) 20% - Organic Unrefined Cocoa Butter (Absolutely Wholesale) 10% - Organic Castor Oil (New Directions) 5% - Sodium Lactate (Heirloom Body Care) Lye Phase; 5% - Organic Brown Sugar (ALDI) 1.2% - Pink Himalayan Salt (Woolworths) 1090g Distilled Water (Rounded up to 1100g) – 2:1 water to lye ratio (my personal favourite method) Moore’s Ultra Still Pure Water (Woolworths) -10% Superfat / 10% lye Excess – 545.11g of 90% Purity Potassium Hydroxide, I rounded it down to 545g (Sydney Solvents) Dilution Phase; 5:1 water to oil ratio - 10kg / 10L of distilled water. You can use anywhere between 2:1 & 6:1 just depends on preference. I personally go by water to oil ratio, if going by weight, soap paste weighs approximately 3000g / 3kg x 3.33 = 9990g of distilled water rounded up to 10kg. This is a 3.33:1 ratio 2.5% - 50g of Citric acid (New Directions) dissolve in 100g of distilled water. Add slowly and continuously test PH to ensure you neutralise the excess Lye as this recipe uses a 10% lye excess. Do not pour the whole thing in 3% - Guar Gum (New Directions) 20% - Palm Free Vegetable Glycerine (New Directions) mix guar gum into the glycerine before adding to the liquid soap. Be sure it’s well hydrated to avoid fish eyes and clumps 2% - Natural Vitamin E (AWO - Australian Wholesale Oils) 0.5% - Grapefruit Seed Extract (AWO - Australian Wholesale Oils) Music by 🤍. They have a great range of music for videos such as this one! These are available for sale on the website and eBay Australia.
