Hey there, We're incredibly excited to be launching a new strand of content on JacksGap called Shed Sessions. Last week we invited the incredibly talented Shannon Saunders to perform an acoustic shed session in our garden shed. We had a lot of fun shooting it and we're feel incredibly excited to be sharing it with you. We want to stress this is in no way a subtraction from the 'usual' type of content we produce but an addition. We're excited about the prospect of sharing musicians that we admire whilst working to create our own original videos. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. We'd be interested to know. Noah Wegrich and Darshan Gooch test out four vintage surf crafts in the waters of Santa Cruz For Season 2 of Shed Sessions, we're taking a slightly different approach. Rather than allowing the surfers to run rampant in Eric "Bird" Huffman’s San Diego shoppicking out whatever boards they wantwe're letting Bird take the reigns. "I started gathering boards in 1972," says Bird. "At this point I've got about 1200, so there's a wide, wide variety of boards. For this season, I'm gonna pull out three or four boards that I think would be fun, and then we're gonna reunite the equipment with the area and the people where it came from in the first place." For the season 2 premiere, Bird picked four boards with roots in Santa Cruz, and then we drove them up the coast to put them back in SC's waves, ridden by SC locals Noah Wegrich and Darshan Gooch. Bird's picks, which include a classic ’60s performance longboard and a ’90s tow-board with weights down the middle, are anything but ordinary, but neither are the lines Gooch and Wegrich draw on them. "Everything rides," says Bird Huffman of Bird's Surf Shed. "You should expand your surfing horizons and capabilities." "Everything Rides" should maybe take over the "Ride Anything" moniker for our zeitgeist of board experimentation. Way cooler of a phrase. And hey, Bird gets it. One look at the smorgasbord of surfboards in the Shed tells you that. Speaking of which, for this episode of Shed Sessions, Bird picked about as random an assortments of boards as you could imagine, most of which are from North County, San Diego shapers. A bonzer from Leucadia wizard Gary Hanel. A progressive late '60s single fin log from Don Hansen. A squirty little 5'2" fish from Sunset Surf Shop's Ed Wright. Even tossed in a flex-tail thingie as a non-North County wildcard from Allan Gibbons, a legendary figure who ghost shaped for Al Merrick for a long time, just to throw an even odder board into the mix. We sent Joel Tudor, Derrick Disney, Jake Marshall, and Duran Barr out to put 'em through their paces. Bird was right. Everything does ride. IAN CRANE, NATE YEOMANS, AND JETT SCHILLING TAKE THREE SURFBOARDS WITH A SAN CLEMENTE HISTORY FOR A SPIN. For Season 2 of Shed Sessions, we’re taking a slightly different approach. Rather than allowing the surfers to run rampant in Eric “Bird” Huffman's San Diego shopwhich has a collection of over 1200 vintage surfboardswe’re letting Bird curate the quiver. For the second episode, we grabbed Ian Crane, Nate Yeomans and Jett Schilling and paired them up with three very different surfboards that Bird picked specifically with San Clemente in mind: A three-inch thick single with a starfin, a Kolohe Andino grom-era thruster, and a classic performance twin fin. While each board poses its own unique challenges, it’s fun to watch this trio of SC goofys try to figure them out. It's where Biggie Tembo and the rest of the band developed their jit-jive style and created a classic sound with intricately interlocking guitar parts. Comprised of two LPs, Shabini and Tsvimbodzemoto, this is really the legendary sound of the band, spawning four number one singles at home and establishing their reputation overseas. This CD not only collects the songs from those albums, but adds more, for a total of 28 cuts, all powered by some storming guitar work. But while they show their fire on tracks like "Pachedu," they also take on the feel of more traditional mbira music on the moody "Manhenga." It's ironic that they should hit their creative high point so early in their career, never recapturing the spirit that made this music so remarkable and glittering. From here they'd move to England, but in the '90s everything would fall apart, as members died of AIDS and Biggie Tembo hanged himself after being asked to leave the band. A tragic end that wasn't foreseen in some of the best guitar music to emerge from Africa."
