How Did the Russian Empire Actually Work?

How did the autocratic Tsars, the emperors of Russia, control their massive state? The Russian Empire stretched from Poland to the Pacific Ocean and ruled over tens of millions of people, but for almost its entire existence the Russian Empire was presided over by just a single man. Over the decades the Tsars had to adapt to a changing world, and a changing Russia, and they did so with varying degrees of success. From the absolutist Nicholas I to his reformist son, Alexander II, to the last of them all, Nicholas II, each Tsar approached governing with his own ideas, strategies, and plans for greatness. History of Russia in 5 Minutes - Animation

This video presents a brief history of Russia, the largest country in the world. Chapter 00:00 Introduction 00:25 Early History 01:15 From the Grand Duchy of Moscow to the Russian Empire (1283 - 1917) 02:31 The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union (1922 - 1991) 04:50 Russian Federation (1991-present) Russia's history is traced back to the people called “Slavs”. In 862, the first East Slavic state, known as the Rus’ state, was founded and led by the Viking Oleg of Novgorod with Kiev as its capital. In the 13th century, the Mongols invaded Kievan Rus and established the Golden Horde, with the Rus’ principalities as their vassals. In 1480, Moscow gained its independence from Mongol rule, forming the Grand Duchy of Moscow or Muscovy. In 1547, Ivan IV, or Ivan the Terrible, became the first Tsar (Emperor) of Russia, transforming the Grand Duchy of Moscow into the Tsardom of Russia. From 1551 to 1700, Russia was transformed into the Russian Empire in 1721 under the reign of Peter the Great. The next century witnessed the expansion of the empire, stretching over three continents, Europe, Asia, and North America. The Russian Revolution in 1917 and the Rusian Civil War paved the way for the establishment of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), the Soviet Union. Under the rule of Joseph Stalin, the country was transformed from a peasant society to a military and industrial power. On September 1, 1939, World War II broke out between the Allied and Axis powers. On May 8, 1945, after the fall of Berlin to Soviet troops and Hitler’s suicide, Germany surrendered unconditionally, marking the end of the war in Europe. Following the war, the Soviet Union formed various Soviet satellite states and emerged as a superpower and rival to the United States in the nearly half-century-long Cold War. In 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev became the Soviet leader and was later elected president in 1990. In December 1991, following a failed Communist Party coup against Gorbachev, the Soviet Union was dissolved and Gorbachev resigned. Following the dissolution, all of the Soviet republics emerged as fully independent post-Soviet states. Among these, Russia, or the Russian Federation, became known as the Soviet Union's primary de facto internationally recognized successor state. In 2014, following the Ukrainian Revolution, war broke out between Russia and Ukraine. On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, escalating the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. What do you think is the decisive factor leading to the Russo-Ukrainian War? Russian Empire (1912) "Farewell of Slavianka" (White Army/Kolchak Government, 1917-1922)

Official Discord server: 🤍 Прощание славянки Unofficial anthem of the White Army and the Kolchak Government (1917-1923) The 1912 Lyrics Lyrics (English): Arise, Russian Land, defend your Faith! We have composed many a song in our heart, Glorifying the native land. We've loved you no matter what, You, our holy Russian land. You've raised your head high, Your face has been shining like the sun. You've become a victim of betrayal by those who have cheated and sold you! Refrain: And again in march trumpet calls us. We all stand in order And go to the holy battle. Arise, Russian Land, defend the faith! Russia's holiness awaits victory. Respond, the Orthodox host! Where is your Ilya, where is Dobrynia? The mother is summoning her sons. Under the banners of all we stand boldly Procession with prayers go, For the Russian right thing The blood we shed Russian honestly. Refrain We all are children of a Great Power, We all remember the forefathers' commandment: For the Homeland, Honor, Glory, Pity neither yourself nor the foes. Arise, Russia, from your prison of slavery, Victory's spirit is called: time to do battle! Rise your battle flags For Faith, Love, and Good.

The Romanovs. The Real History of the Russian Dynasty. Episodes 1-4. StarMediaEN

All episodes: 🤍 In 1613 The Zemsky Sobor (the National Assembly) adopted a decision to invite Michael Fyodorovich Romanov to become tsar of Russia. This decision was announced in Red Square in front of numerous crowds of people: “Michael Fyodorovich shall be tsar and lord of Muscovy and all the Russian state.” In order to prevent disturbances, Michael Romanov had to take a terrible sin upon his soul – to execute a 3 year-old boy… The most vivid pages of Russian history and the establishment and consolidation of Russian state power are associated with the eighteen Russian Tsars of the House of Romanov which include such historic names as Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Nicholas I and Alexanders I, II and III. The dynasty ended with the brutal assassination of the last Tsar, Nicholas II and his family by the Bolsheviks in Ekaterinburg in 1917. The Romanov dynasty played a hugely important role in world history, and the series highlights the life stories and characters of the tsars, recounting their rise to power and their contribution to the dynasty, their merits and their faults, their achievements and mistakes, their victories and defeats in war. The series also examines the Russian form of 'Caesarism' as a system of state administration - its advantages and drawbacks and how the Russian state changed under the Romanov's rule. THE ROMANOVS is told in eight epic one-hour episodes using a unique combination of magnificent CGI animation and dramatic reconstruction with careful and accurate attention paid to each period. National Anthem of the Russian Empire: God Save the Tsar [Remastered]

"God Save the Tsar!" was the national anthem of the Russian Empire. The song was chosen from a competition held in 1833 and was first performed on 18 December 1833. The composer was violinist Alexei Lvov, and the lyrics were by the court poet Vasily Zhukovsky. It was the anthem until the Russian Revolution of 1917, after which "Worker's Marseillaise" was adopted as the new national anthem until the overthrow of the Russian Provisional Government.

Russia, the Kievan Rus, and the Mongols: Crash Course World History #20

If you're interested in learning more about the Russian government's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, check out this vlogbrothers video published on 3/15/2022: 🤍 In which John Green teaches you how Russia evolved from a loose amalgamation of medieval principalities known as the Kievan Rus into the thriving democracy we know today. As you can imagine, there were a few bumps along the road. It turns out that our old friends the Mongols had quite a lot to do with unifying Russia. In yet another example of how surprisingly organized nomadic raiders can be, the Mongols brought the Kievan Rus together under a single leadership and concentrated power in Moscow. This set the stage for the various Ivans (the Great and the Terrible) to throw off the yoke and form a pan-Russian nation ruled by an autocratic leader. More than 500 years later, we still have autocratic leadership in Russia. All this, plus a rundown of some of our favorite atrocities of Ivan the Terrible, and a visit from Putin! (Turn on Youtube Subtitles for English Subtitles) Farewell of Slavianka is a Russian patriotic march, written by the composer Vasily Agapkin in honour of the Slavic women accompanying their husbands in the First Balkan War. The march was written and premiered in Tambov in the end of 1912. In summer of 1915 it was released as a gramophone single in Kiev. Slavyanka means "Slavic woman". The march was used as an unofficial anthem of Admiral Kolchak's White Army. In addition, the melody is used, with different lyrics, as the anthem of the Tambov Oblast.

Timothy Snyder: The Making of Modern Ukraine. Class 21. Comparative Russian Imperialism

Class 21 features guest lecturer, Professor Arne Westad, comparing Russian imperialism with other empires in recent centuries. Timothy Snyder is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. He speaks five and reads ten European languages. Ukraine must have existed as a society and polity on 23 February 2022, else Ukrainians would not have collectively resisted Russian invasion the next day. What does it mean for a nation to exist? Is this a matter of structures, actions, or both? Why has the existence of Ukraine occasioned such controversy? In what ways are Polish, Russian, and Jewish self-understanding dependent upon experiences in Ukraine? Just how and when did a modern Ukrainian nation emerge? For that matter, how does any modern nation emerge? Why some and not others? Can nations be chosen, and can choices be decisive? If so, whose, and how? Ukraine was the country most touched by Soviet and Nazi terror: what can we learn about those systems, then, from Ukraine? Is the post-colonial, multilingual Ukrainian nation a holdover from the past, or does it hold some promise for the future?
