The Range Rover has always been seen as pretty much the pinnacle of British SUV craftsmanship (no offence, Bentley Bentayga…), but the question is, does the latest generation live up to the quality of the last iteration? Well, it’s time to find out! Mat’s joined forces with Yianni to put the new Range through its paces. In terms of cost, it starts from around £99,000, jumping all the way up to £180,000 - so what do you get for your money? Well starting with the design, it’s so much smoother and sleeker than before. From the front through to the back, this is one SUV that’s done away with the creases and curves, but one which thankfully remains unmistakably a Range Rover! Around the back, you’ll find hidden lights which are integrated into the car, along with flush door handles on either side and an all-new grille design up front. The quality continues on the inside, too. Sure, it’s maybe not as luxurious as a Bentayga, but it’s still built to a high quality! The chairs are super comfy, and there is a whole load of storage to be found throughout the cabin. You get a big infotainment screen up front coupled with some physical climate control buttons, and of course, it comes with a digital dial display. In terms of engines, there are a number of petrol and diesel options to choose from, with the range-topper being a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can deliver 530hp! So what do you think? It doesn’t come cheap, but has the new Range Rover reclaimed its SUV crown? You’ll have to stick with Mat and Yianni to see for yourself! Gebouwd op een compleet nieuw platform moet de Range Rover weer onze harten veroveren, beginnend bij deze rijtest. Eén ding kan je ze in ieder geval nageven: copycats zijn het niet. De Range Rover, officiële naam Land Rover Range Rover, gaat al een halve eeuw mee. Pas eind jaren negentig werden de Duitsers wakker en startten ook met het bouwen van luxe SUV’s. De Range Rover combineert van oudsher sereen comfort met allesoverwinnende capaciteiten. Giet dat in een modern jasje en het moet goed komen. Toch? We gaan het uitvinden in de rijtest van de New Range Rover. Om eerst maar zuur te beginnen: je moet écht een kenner zijn om de voorkant van het vorige model te kunnen onderscheiden. Er is niet veel mis mee, maar spannend is het daarmee ook niet. De kont is dat duidelijk wel. Die is nogal fors (waar ook liefhebbers voor zijn) en heeft een tweedelige achterklep. Opvallend detail is dat de achterlichten onzichtbaar zijn tenzij ze worden geactiveerd. De New Range Rover wordt gekenmerkt door drie designlijnen die hun oorsprong vinden in alle voorgaande generaties: de aflopende daklijn, de krachtige taillelijn en de oplopende lijn van de dorpel. Ondanks het formaat heeft de New Range Rover een relatief gunstige luchtweerstandscoëfficiënt (cW waarde) van 0,30. Net als bij het uitgaande model is er de keuze uit uit Standard en Long Wheelbase carrosserieën, met naar keuze vier, vijf of zeven zitplaatsen. In de jaren negentig kocht BMW een hele trits Engelse merken waaronder Rover, MINI, Land Rover en Jaguar. Met de komst van het nieuwe millennium sneuvelde dat huwelijk, maar Land Rover producten gebruikte nog wat jaren BMW-techniek waaronder de 4,4 liter grote V8. Als je je druk maakt over brandstofverbruik en/of aanschafprijs, dan is de New Range Rover niets voor jou. Alle verwennerij komt met een prijskaartje en dat begint bij € 142.852. De New Range Rover P530 uit de rijtest kost € 241.391,00. En je kunt nog verder losgaan met de optielijst…. Ergens is de New Range Rover een briljante auto, maar wel één die gevoelsmatig nog gepolijst moet worden. Kleine irritaties waren we snel vergeten, maar het onderstel is niet zo goed als het zou moeten zijn. Een maatje kleinere velgen zal helpen, maar Q7, X5 en GLE laten zien dat het beter kan qua comfort. De Range Rover werd tijdens een evenement in Groot-Brittannië aan de wereld voorgesteld, maar Autovisie werd enkele weken geleden al in de gelegenheid gesteld om de SUV in levenden lijve te komen aanschouwen. Bij de Jaguar Land Rover-dealer in München had de fabrikant de bovenste etage van het indrukwekkende dealerbedrijf opgeëist. Liefst drie modellen van de vijfde generatie gaven daar acte de préséance. Onder toeziend oog van een ontwerper en enkele projectleiders werd de Range Rover als vijfzitter, als gepersonaliseerde SV en als LWB-versie met lange wielbasis gepresenteerd. De volledig elektrisch aangedreven Range Rover was de enige telg die ontbrak. In de video komt de LWB-variant aan bod. For the latest Land Rover Range Rover pricing and information: 🤍 There are nine Range Rover iterations available, if you’re not counting the SV model, which we’re not for our purposes. The base model P400 SE comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharge inline-6 (395 hp/406 lb-ft torque. Base price: $104,500) That comes in a LWB version that gets a seven-seat configuration ($110,500). Yes, that third row is big news for this big luxurious beast and we’ll get into that, literally in a bit. Every Range Rover beyond that comes with a 4.4L Twin Turbo V8 (P530 engine: 523 hp/553 lb-ft torque) and comes in either short or long-wheel base, meaning either a four- or five- or seven-seat configuration. There’s also an Autobiography edition (between $157,600 - $161,000), that’s British for fancy or a First Edition (graphic: from $164,000 - $169,400), British for even fancier. A plug-in hybrid Range Rover ($108,400) shows up in 2023 that gets 434 hp and up to 48 miles of all electric range. And there’s a fully EV Range Rover coming in 2024, so stay tuned for that. The exterior design is part of the evolution I mentioned up front. This is still very clearly a Range Rover. Land Rover does a great job here of maintaining the integrity of the styling and design language but modernizing it and bring it into the future. It maintains its three distinctive lines, this one right here, this one right here and this boat tail rear. Bam. Those three elements a long with the short front overhang have stuck around for the past 50 years and I think Land Rover has done a beautiful job with this latest iteration. The interior is where we start to see more revolution with modern screens, minimalist design language and some environmentally conscious textiles and finishes. Leather and some forward-thinking fabrics from Ultrafabrics and Kvadrat make the interior of the Range Rover absolutely beautiful. It’s just next level. Of course everywhere you put an elbow or a hand it feels soft and lux. The tech in here is pretty lux, too. It integrates Amazon Alexa as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, all wireless, as well as wireless charging, so that you’re connected while you’re driving via this 13.1-inch touchscreen. I’ve traditionally not been a fan of Land Rover UX systems. This is the new EVA 2.0 system and off the bat, I’m not going to lie, it still feels pretty layered and not super intuitive. It’s taken me a long time to figure out how to get to my radio station presets. Some of the biggest news in the Range Rover is the option for a third row. But let’s start with the second row. The second row is great, plenty of leg and head room, which is expected. But let’s get back into the third row. It’s not as whisper quiet as I thought it would be. I’m getting a lot of wind noise from the front of the car. And thanks in part to the low-profile tires you do hear the road more than you would on say a luxury sedan. Every new Range Rover gets all-wheel steering. This is a great feature for massive SUVs because it makes them drive so much smaller than they really are. The Range Rover is no exception. Both on and off-road, should you be smart enough to take your SUV off-road you are extremely maneuverable and nimble. It gets another system call Dynamic Response Pro, which helps with the body roll stability comes with the standard fully independent air suspension. You are never going to fully avoid body roll in here, it’s just physics, but the Range Rover does a solid job of keeping you feeling as planted as you’re going to be. That suspension really makes the Range Rover well-behaved on the road. It’s of course comfortable, but it’s when you go off-road where that air at four corners is a real pleasant surprise. As for off-road comfort, it’s surprising. It’s got the same manners as the Defender, meaning when you drive over rough terrain it’s not an unpleasant or jouncy experience. The Range Rover even for its size is remarkably capable and extremely cushiony. Power in the inline-6 feels plentiful. The throttle is responsive but smooth and I don’t feel much lag from the turbo, just a steady acceleration. I got to spend some time in the V8 as well and it hauls. But on this one, I didn’t feel the throttle mapping was quite as smooth. Power delivery felt a bit jerky. Acceleration is good, but I didn’t find it as smooth and therefore comfortable as the 6-cylinder. It’s one of the most recognizable vehicles in the world and is still looking like a Queen. Just a modern one, now. The Land Rover Range Rover’s rolling into the modern era, and now with some full-size American SUVs and trucks turning into $100,000 propositions, the Range Rover doesn’t even seem that expensive anymore. Verdict The Range Rover has all the makings of a world-class luxury sedan mixed with the off-road capabilities of a true SUV. What's New for 2022? The all-new 2022 Range Rover—not to be confused with the outgoing model, which is also a 2022—is redesigned from the ground up with updated styling, new tech features, and luxury touches. A more luxurious and highly-customizable SV trim will join the lineup for the 2023 model year. The outgoing-generation Range Rover, which is also a 2022 model and on sale for the time being, receives few changes for 2022. The diesel V-6 and plug-in-hybrid P400e models have been discontinued from the new Range Rover lineup, leaving the turbocharged inline-six and the supercharged V-8 as the only powertrain options. Buyers can now also add a more robust cabin air-ionization system as well. Pricing and Which One to Buy SE: $95,150 Autobiography: $153,350 First Edition: $159,550 We'd recommend opting for the mid-range Autobiography model, which adds several sought-after items that luxury buyers will appreciate. For example, the Autobiography comes standard with a 1600-watt Meridian stereo system featuring headrest-mounted speakers and active noise cancellation. The new Range Rover will be offered in both a short- and long-wheelbase body styles; and we suggest going for the latter since it creates room for a third row of seats and provides a more generous cargo area. Engine, Transmission, and Performance At launch, the new Range Rover will be available with a trio of powertrains, starting with a turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt hybrid system dubbed P400 that develops 395 horsepower. During our initial test drive it proved to be silky-smooth and provided adequate pep to tug the large Range Rover around. A 523-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine—Land Rover calls it P530—is even perkier and cranks up the Range Rover's towing capacity to 8200 pounds. Land Rover says a 434-hp plug-in hybrid option will join the lineup for 2023 and will offer up to 48 miles of electric-only driving; an all-electric model will be available starting in 2024. The new Range Rover's ride is suitably plush and, with its adjustable air suspension set to Comfort mode, it virtually floats down the road. Turning the dial to Dynamic mode firms things up some, but the big Rover still aims for a comfort-first mission. When we get a chance to take the Range Rover on our test track, we'll update this story with test results. Meanwhile, the outgoing Range Rover, which buyers may still find lurking on a few dealers’ lots, might be a relative bargain. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The entry-level P400 is rated for 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway while the V-8­–powered P530 has earned 16 mpg city and 21 mpg highway estimates. When we have a chance, we'll test the Range Rover on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route and update this story with details. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo As with past generations of the Range Rover, the new generation model offers a plush interior decked out with rich leathers and woods, but buyers who want a more sustainable cabin can now opt for a new leather-free option, which subs-in wool or other textiles. The interior can be arranged to seat four, five, or seven depending on configuration and wheelbase. The third row, even in long-wheelbase trims, may not fit tall adults as the headroom there is somewhat limited, but shorter riders and kids will find it nearly as comfortable as the second row. An optional motorized divider for the cargo area helps keep things from moving around too much during travel, and the Range Rover's split rear liftgate can be used as convenient and comfortable seating for outdoor events. Nuova Range Rover (2022), come GUIDARE nel lusso DAPPERTUTTO Mettere insieme la raffinatezza di un'auto di lusso con la capacità di carico di una station wagon; il comfort di una berlina da viaggio con le possibilità di andare ovunque tipiche di un fuoristrada. È sempre stato questo l'obiettivo di una Range Rover: unire esigenze opposte, in un'unica auto, realizzando la macchina "totale". Ed è su queste premesse che la nuova Range Rover debutta sul mercato con la quinta generazione, introducendo un'inedita piattaforma telaistica che permette di alzare il livello di elettrificazione, versione 100% elettrica inclusa. L'ho guidata per la prima volta in California, vicino a San Francisco, sia su strada che in fuoristrada. Fuori la carrozzeria è come se fosse "ricavata dal pieno": è con questa espressione, riferita alla lavorazione dei metalli, che i designer sottolineano il colpo d'occhio della nuova Range Rover. Lo stile è dominato infatti da un trattamento delle superfici che enfatizza i volumi, grazie anche all'utilizzo di poche linee e di raccordi dolci, morbidi, eleganti. A colpire in modo particolare è la coda, perché va a chiudere le fiancate ricordando la poppa di una barca e abbracciando la modernità dei fanali posteriori: quando sono spenti, mostrano una superficie "nero lucido" che li mimetizza, dando alla nuova Range Rover l'aspetto di un prototipo mentre, a luci accese, si riempiono di un rosso che sembra liquido. E anche l'abitacolo della nuova Range Rover segue il minimalismo estetico che caratterizza l'aspetto esterno, con soluzioni che aiutano a pulire il design. In movimento, la sensazione di comfort che una Range Rover trasmette non è dovuta solo al silenzio, o all'assorbimento delle sospensioni. Il relax che si prova viaggiando deriva più in generale dall'atmosfera che si respira a bordo, grazie anche alla superficie vetrata che da sempre caratterizza questo SUV inglese. Un aspetto che rende i trasferimenti più piacevoli per i passeggeri, e che permette a chi guida di rilassarsi, perché poter percepire con naturalezza gli ingombri dell'auto fa impostare in maniera intuitiva le traiettorie, nonostante le dimensioni della carrozzeria. Il resto delle impressioni di guida lo trovate nel video, che vede protagonista il motore 3.0 Diesel mild hybrid da 350 CV, disponibile anche con potenze di 250 CV e 300 CV. E nella gamma della nuova Range Rover si può scegliere poi un 3.0 turbo benzina, sempre mild Hybrid 6 cilindri in linea, con 400 CV. Si tratta di un motore condiviso anche con la versione ibrida plug-in, che monta in aggiunta un motore elettrico da 143 CV e una batteria da 38,2 kWh, per un’autonomia elettrica dichiarata di 100 km. E potenze complessive di 440 CV o 510 CV. L’unico motore esclusivamente termico del listino, invece, è il 4.4 V8 bi-turbo da 530 CV. E, nel 2024, è previsto l’arrivo anche della Range Rover completamente elettrica. I prezzi oggi partono da 129.100 euro per la diesel da 250 CV con carrozzeria a passo corto, da 141.300 euro per la plug-in, oppure da 145.200 euro per la 6 cilindri 3.0 benzina mild hybrid e da quasi 158.700 euro per la V8 4.4 benzina. Con un sovrapprezzo di circa 4.000 euro per avere, a parità di motorizzazione, la carrozzeria a passo lungo.
