Melissani Cave or Melissani Lake is one of the most beautiful places and attractions of the Greek island of Kefalonia. In Greek mythology, Melissani was the Cave of the Nymphs. It was forgotten for many centuries until 1951, when the Greek Giannis Petrocheilos rediscovered it. The cave with the lake in the middle is surrounded by forest. The water of Melissani Lake has a blue color and its bottom is rocky. The entire cave is 3.5 km long, 36 m high and 40 m wide. The biggest attraction of Melissani is the lake on which boats float, admiring both limestone formations and the forest surrounding the cave-in. Visiting the Melissani Cave has rightfully become a must-see for visitors to Kefalonia. Its two rooms offer very different experiences. The first is of a mystical blue created by sunlight streaming through the collapsed roof centuries ago. And the second room, which is reached by passing through a very narrow passage. There are 20,000-year-old stalagmites here and an island in the middle where excavations have revealed a number of artifacts (oil lamps, plates and figures depicting the god Pan and several nymphs) that have added to the legend the cave. Here it appears that one of those nymphs, Melissani (or Melissanthi), drowned after being rejected by Pan. Hence the other name of the cave, Cave of the Nymphs. KEFALONIA GREECE Travel Vlog TOP SIGHTS - Lake MELISSANI, SAMI, DROGARATI Cave & ARGOSTOLI! In this travel vlog we explore some of the top sights in Kefalonia including the famous Lake Melissani and cave which is an impressive natural wonder just outside the popular tourist town of Sami. It’s easy to see why so many visitors come here, the caves are fascinating and drifting around the crystal clear lake on a row boat is beautiful! Afterwards we grab some lunch in the town of Sami before heading off to explore the drogarati caves, which were huge and although really cool to wander around, it was also pretty scary being down inside a huge cave as we had it all to ourselves the whole time! We finish the day back in Argostoli the capital of Kefalonia where the story of the fresh lake water we saw in Melissani comes ‘full circle’ as we stand at the point the water travels around the island on a two week journey. We then enjoy the views from the Argostoli lighthouse Theodoroi, which gives a romantic view at night across to the Peninsula of Paliki and the island of Vardianoi. Upcoming Videos! Join us next time as we head out in search of Kefalonia's beaches and find out just how hard this little island was hit by hurricane Ianos and the global pandemic. 🤍 🤍 Lake Melissani is one of the tourist attractions of Kefalonia island, which should not be missed. Melissani Lake creeks tourists through the shades of blue water. You can sail safely on the lake to the small island inside the covered cave. Legend has it that one of the nymphs living in the cave, called Melissanthy or Melissani, committed suicide in the waters of the lake after being rejected by the god Pan. for this reason the cave is also called "Nimfelor Cave" ".The cave also enchants through the vertical walls, above which there are numerous trees, as well as stalagmites and walls covered with musk and algae, creating an unforgettable image. 🤍 🤍
Boruhoff' Travel channel (travel vlog) presents of travel video for travel lovers - Greece's Best Kept Secret: The Magnificent Lake in Melissani Cave, Kefalonia, Greece. Melissani Cave (Greek: Μελισσάνη) or Melissani Lake, also Melisani is a cave located on the island of Kefalonia, northwest of Sami, about 5 km (3.1 mi) Southeast of Agia Effimia, Northeast of Argostoli and Northwest of Poros. The Ionian Sea lies to the east with the Strait of Ithaca. Forests surround the cave and the mountain slope is to the west. Near the cave is the entry to the cave with parking lots and is passed almost in the middle of the main road linking Sami and Agia Efimia especially to the northern part of the island. Some say the water is so clear the boats look like they are floating on air. In Greek mythology, Melissani was the Cave of the Nymphs. It features a lake surrounded with trees and forest, and is located east of the mountains of Evmorfia and Agia Dynati. Tourism is common. The lake's bottom is covered with stones. Plants grow at the opening of the cave. The color of the stone near the opening is stucco to honey-like brown. The cave was rediscovered in 1951 by Giannis Petrocheilos. Melissani cave is a typical feature of karst environment in coastal carbonate aquifer. It forms a kind of cenote, as described in the Yucatán peninsula (Mexico). The vertical shaft gives access to the water table (where you can do a round trip on a small boat). This groundwater is brackish, mixing between fresh water recharge inland and sea water intruded in depth in the island. Huge karst conduits have been explored by speleo-divers. The bay of Sami has many cenotes, with impressive shafts, that have been inventoried in a GIS Database. The brackish water flowing through the cenotes outflows along the sea shore, forming brackish coastal and submarine springs. The groundwater of Melissani cave outflows at the "Fridi" beach. This brackish water is part of a famous hydrogeological phenomena : seawater is sucked in the west part of the island of Kefalonia, near Argostoli, and expelled in the bay of Sami. In Argostoli, the seawater flows into sinkholes, named katavothres, where water mill turns. Source: 🤍 Melissani Cave, Kefalonia, Greece. According to mythology, caves have always been associated with the divine due to their enclosed beauty with the result that they were the most suitable places for religious ceremonies. Melissani has its own myths; the locals believe it is named after a shepherdess called Melisanthe who was looking for her lost sheep and fell into the lake and drowned. Another myth refers to the nymph Melissani who committed suicide in the Lake because Pan would not reciprocate her love. The dolphins are also associated with this myth, having been used by the nymph to carry messages to her beloved; they turned into stone in the cave after her demise. EN: The Cave of Melissani in Kefalonia: Situated just outside Sami, the Cave of Melissani has a strange appeal. It is one of the most significant places for tourists to visit in Greece. Surprisingly, there is a lake inside the cave that has trees and forests surrounding it. The cave itself is B-shaped with two chambers or halls separated with land or an island in the center. The roof of one of the halls caved in centuries ago letting sunlight filter in. The depth of the lake is 20 to 30 meters. When the sun is right overhead at noon, the sunlight hitting the turquoise-blue waters create a magical illusion and the whole Cave of Melissani suddenly feels lit with blue light. Finally Panos makes his long awaited big debut on hello antonio! We visit the Melissani Lake in Melissani Cave. But instead of joining a package tour full of tourists from across the Balkans and beyond, we walk there (with a little bit of difficulty) from the port of Sami. We also try local Kefalonian beer and eat some of the best food I've ever tasted. Kefalonian pie and smoky eggplant, anyone?

Three kilometers west of #Sami port lies an underground #miracle of #nature that you have never seen before. At the end of the video you can find detailed maps of the area. The #cave took its current form when part of its roof collapsed. The entrance is made by stairs and a long underground corridor, which allows the #visitor to see up close the rare beauty of the cave and to be dazzled by the amazing decoration with #stalactites. Beautiful crystal clear waters in all shades of #blue! It is said that the waters of the cave come from neighboring springs but mainly from the #sinkholes of #Argostoli 30 km away. A spot that is swallowing sea water… The difference in temperature of the atmospheric air with the cold water causes the formation of a thin layer of fog that is impressive! At midday, the #rays of #light that flood the cave are so bright and intense that you have the feeling that you will be radiated in a parallel #magical #universe where you will witness untold fascinating stories of the past and the well-hidden #secrets of Melissani. As the sun sets, golden yellow and red beams #bathe the walls of the cave creating a unique setting, while countless stalactites shimmer around you and take your breath away, taking you to another magical world. The lake cave of Melissani was known since antiquity as the "Cave of the #Nymphs". In this imposing place the god Faunus and the Nymphs were worshiped. One of them was called #Melissanthi and when the rural deity refused her love call, she fell and drowned in the clear blue #waters of the #lake. If you are lucky you can still recognize their figures between the play of bright light with shadows and stalactites. Visitors board the #boats safely, to take a magnificent #tour. The water is so clear that the boats seem to be floating in the air. The stories the boatman shares are often really fun. An amazing moment on your summer vacation! The lake is located at a depth of 20 meters, below the ground surface, and its waters have a depth that varies from ten to thirty meters. Inside the lake there is a small #island. During archeological excavations, several relics and idols depicting #Faunus and many nymphs were discovered. What your eyes saw in this video and what you will experience uniquely when you visit the lake, will manage to captivate you and then you set yourself free again! In Kefalonia there is so much beauty and energy that your batteries will be fully charged. And you will breathe carefree, without stress, sorrows or thoughts. Paradise on earth has a name and is located in Greece. Fascinating Melissani Lake is one of the most beautiful sites on Kefalonia. Situated in a cave, it was researched in 1951 by the well-known speleologists Anna Petrochilou and her husband Yiannis who entered the cave with ropes through the cave’s opening above the lake. At that occasion, they found an oil lamp on the small islet which separates the cave into two parts. God Pan at Melissani When the archaeologist Marinatos excavated the islet in 1962 he found several artefacts from the 4th and 3rd century BC which suggest that this islet was a place of worship, dedicated to the god Pan and the nymphs. Among other finds, there is a figurine of god Pan as well as a clay plate, showing dancing nymphs. In mythology nymphs are minor goddesses, associated with nature; with forests, mountains, grottos and most of all water: rivers, lakes, springs and the sea. They are depicted as beautiful, young women being companions of the gods. So it is not surprising that according to local legend a nymph called Melissanthe committed suicide in the lake when god Pan rejected her love for him. Part of the cave’s roof collapsed a few thousand years ago due to an earthquake. The daylight falls through this opening, showing the colour of the lake in its deep blue. As soon as the sun stands high above the lake, the sunrays lighten up the crystal clear water to an unreal bright turquoise. So the best time to visit Melissani is around noon. The water is so clear that you can see the ground even at its highest depth of 30 metres. Keep an eye out for eels in the lake. In 1963 a short tunnel was created to give visitors access to the lake. Rowing boats are waiting for you when you reach the lake at the end of the tunnel.

#greece #kefalonia #exploringgrece 🏛️Greece 🇬🇷, Melissani Cave 🔶There are places in Greece that have amazing beauty and attractiveness. Many of them are shrouded in secrets, myths and legends. One of these places is the Melissani Cave. It is located on the island of Kefalonia, about two kilometers from the city of Sami. The origin of the cave is associated with a complex geological karst process, thanks to which rocks are dissolved by water. For many millennia, underground and surface waters have made their own passages, destroyed the calcareous rock and formed a cave underground. Part of the cave space is occupied by the underground lake Melissani, whose age exceeds 20 thousand years. 🔶Today, everyone can explore the cave. In 1963, in order to provide easy access to the lake, a tunnel was laid in the rock. It leads underground to a pier with rowboats, on which tourists are taken to the far part of the cave.
