(19 Jan 2000) Natural Sound The only Asian designer to attend French fashion week showed her latest range on Tuesday. Hanae Mori, one of Japan's most acclaimed designers, showed off her spectacularly bold and colorful collection. French designer Christian Lacroix also displayed his latest artistic creations. Bold colours and beautiful lines. This is the work of Japanese designer Hanae Mori She is the Japanese imperial family's favourite and offered a very colourful show at the Haute Couture week in the French capital. Mori is the only Asian designer to attend and used fine materials such as silk, lace and broidery. Her collection included wearable fluid crepe trouser suits, with the signature draping, or fancy silver or braided frog fastenings. The show included a whole range of exclusive day and evening wear. The collection started with eye catching silk dresses decorated with various accessories. And there were the ravishing "garden" dresses with intricate beaded embroidery in flower and birds of paradise on graded shades of daffodil and pearly gray silk. Her collection wouldn't be complete without a wonderful white wedding dress. Mori's collection definitely had a feminine feel to it. France's very own Christian Lacroix offered a more unconventional version of fashion at his Haute Couture show with very bright, strong colour. Lacroix turned in a wonderfully artistic show at the Beaux Arts school in Paris. The witty and wearable party gear showed off Lacroix's great talent for modern art, from abstract graffiti designs to a sensual use of different fabric surfaces. The clever fabric-contrast effects on some fabulously cut evening wear brought gasps from the audience. Materials used for making and dressing up garments included liquorice sweet-like plastic details coupled with luxurious embroidery. Coral and dark shades, asymmetric and scalloped designs showered the catwalk along with the sensual use of fabrics in luxury patchwork. Lacroix also used graphics, light layers, Miro-like painting effects on chiffon. Find out more about AP Archive: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 You can license this story through AP Archive: 🤍

It was full of soft and colourful designs which were meant to glorify the female body. Her suits had swirling, pleated skirts, cut on the bias to resemble flower petals. Her evening dresses came in two lengths - short and long, with nothing in the moderate range. They also continued the flower theme and came in a riot of colours. Mori's tribute to Japan came in the form of a carp swimming down a black and white satin evening dress with long sleeves, embroidered at the shoulders and bodice and finished with a black rose. 🤍 FLASHBACK - Hanae Mori Spring/Summer 1997 haute couture runway show at Paris Fashion Week.
(23 Jan 1998) T/I: 10:00:00 9805 Fashion-Haute Couture / Paris / 20th + 18th Jan / ENT 5 Flower power rules at the haute couture shows Several high calibre but less hyped designers made a splash with their collections at the Paris fashion shows. Japanese designer, Hanae Mori, was greatly inspired by the hit musical, "The Lion King". Her latest haute couture collection for next spring/summer incorporated a dazzling series of African animal prints from a panther evening dress in white leather, matched with a feather trimmed skirt to a figure-hugging zebra dress and a pair of tiger printed pants teamed with a beaded jacket. Meanwhile, French stalwart, Gerard Pipart, put the finishing touches to his collection for Nina Ricci. Like Hanae Mori, Pipart also produced a colourful collection, with rose and flower motifs abounding. The main trend for next spring and summer will be the return of full, flowing skirts and pleated dresses. (28 Mar 1977) While the mini-skirt seems likely to stage a come-back this summer, the Hanae Mori fashion show was predominantly an array of long, flowing evening dresses and eye-catching casual wear. This seems to define the "sloppy-balloony" look that was in from autumn right through to winter changing the muddy and rusty tones to clear, bright colours. Hanae Mori devoted her swan song collection to her trademark style - the fusion of East and West "I am a Japanese woman but have worked in Paris for 27 years, and this time I wanted to make the collection East meets West that's all" commented the designer after the show. The show opened with dragon motifs taken from Kabuki on a satin coat; other prints and motifs were devoted to the Orient with bird designs and colours dominated by black , white and red. Lace featured in a variety of contexts - in black and neutral. The hard edge of snakeskin was counteracted by delicate evening dresses in chiffon and use of light embroidery. (25 Jan 1995) Eng/French/Nat The French fashion industry is turning its eyes towards the East and the US as traditional European markets shrink. High fashion is costly and the willingness to spend considerable amounts of money on it in Europe has dwindled, so the big names are looking towards Asia and America. But it's not just haute couture, competition is stiffest in the ready-to-wear market. In the world of haute couture, only about 1-thousand women can afford the tens of thousands of dollars needed to buy the creations of a handful of designers. Haute couture may not generate big revenue, but it does buy prestige, and it maintains a long tradition of fine craftsmanship. The well-to-do clientele may be recession-proof, but the main target audience is the general public. So there's intense competition to grab attention and plant a designer's name in the minds of consumers before the ready-to-wear versions roll out on the market. Designer Hanae Mori employs 100 workers for over six months to produce a haute couture collection. Critics ask, "Is it worth it?" SOUNDBITE: "People are talking about (how) haute couture and high fashion is going to die, but I don't think so. We need couture by hand. It's very important." SUPER CAPTION: Hanae Mori, Designer Mori's high fashion dresses start at 10-thousand dollars and range up to 100-thousand dollars for a select few. SOUNDBITE: "I have a lot of clients, of course in Japan, the royal family, and so important is the independent woman." SUPER CAPTION: Hanae Mori, Designer At Hanae Mori's 40-year-old atelier, her employees craft and tailor to the individual buyer's tastes. The day after the show, the fashion houses throw open their doors for the high fashion faithful to place their orders. SOUNDBITE: "We cannot make money out of this. If you look at haute couture, it costs so much effort and time to make this collection. It's a very expensive process to organize a big fashion show, just to sell a few hundred dresses." "It's to make a statement, who we are, what we do, and we believe it's the best way to pass the message." SUPER CAPTION: Kei Mori, President of Hanae Mori Company Compared to the billions of dollars spent on clothes around the world, haute couture is a limited market. The number of designers showing this season in Paris are less then 20. But with more than 55 (m) million dollars in high fashion sales a year, there is a faithful clientele, most of them Japanese and American. SOUNDBITE: "Haute couture, it represents the best of the best. The best fabric, the best designers, the best jewelry, the best models, the best everything." SUPER CAPTION: Eileen Ford, Head of Ford Modelling Agency SOUNDBITE: French "The clients are 60 per cent American, 20 per cent Asian, and the rest Europe. There's the breakdown of clients around the world. We estimate about 1,000 to 1,200 clients for haute couture." SUPER CAPTION: Jacques Mouclier, President of French Haute Couture Federation The show goes on, aimed to thrill, shock and dazzle. With all the media attention, it's a lot of free advertising in newspapers and on TV screens around the world. We gawk at the models, the stars. But art for art's sake it is not. The economics behind it make good sense, and the workers need to practice their craft. SOUNDBITE: "And for us that do haute couture, it's the only way to perpetuate the tradition of this kind of profession, and we have to employ that way. We have to set up young people to grow up and learn from the old ones what they have to do to make something." The Hanae Mori Foundation will be presenting a retrospective at La Maison de l'Amérique Latine in Paris from October 6th to the 27th. In addition to her more famous pieces the website informs us that the exhibition will feature an animated robot mannequin designed by Tatsuya Matsui and dressed by Ms. Mori in an effort "to be a hyphen with [the] 21st century rather than pure nostalgia."
