After a brutal war and genocide that claimed about 100,000 lives and displaced more than two million people, it was hoped that an international peace agreement would allow Bosnia to begin healing from the wounds of conflict. Twenty-seven years ago this week leaders of the three main communities agreed a set of principles that would form the basis of the Dayton peace agreement of 1995. The Bosnian War is the worst conflict on European soil since World War II. We went to Sarajevo and Banja Luka to meet Selma and Danilo, and learn what growing up in the country is like for the post-war generation. Selma and Danilo belong to two of the three ethnicities making up Bosnia and Herzegovina's people. To this day, ethnicity is tightly linked to religious denomination: the Balkan country is home to Bosniak Muslims, Orthodox Serbs and Catholic Croats. The groups fought a civil war against each other for four years: 100,000 people died, millions were displaced, and convictions of genocide and war crimes still cast a shadow on the country's unity. We went to Sarajevo and Banja Luka to meet the post-war generation left to build their country's future without having the same version of the past. NB: We chose to identify Banja Luka as the capital of RS because it is, de facto. Behind Bars Season 3 - Episode 4: Zenica Prison, Bosnia and Herzegovina | 4K Prison Documentary Beyond Borders: USA - Inside American Immigration: 🤍 Zenica prison – is the biggest and toughest prison in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The eighteen eighty-six fortress still stands to this day. The prison has survived all kinds of internal and external threats: rebellions, escape attempts, both world wars and the Bosnian war in the 1990s. Zenica has room for almost a thousand inmates. From minor offenses such as robbery to war criminals, there are currently five hundred and fifty prisoners behind bars. They are to be resocialized into three groups and reintegrated into society. Group C is the most dangerous man in Bosnia and is under constant control in solitary confinement. Group A, on the other hand, enjoys privileges such as a job and even weekend leave. Those who follow the rules in Zenica are allowed to have visitors three times a month. Anyone who resists and protests only gets 60 minutes of visiting time per month. One of the detainees is Vikovic Dzevad, who stole 1,800 Euros from a pensioner and has been imprisoned in Zenica for the second time. The prison police are on duty every day to secure Bosnia's largest prison within the five and a half meter high walls. Extraordinary: None of them carry a firearm. Therefore, discipline and physical fitness is an absolute must that the prison administration regularly reviews. One of the prison cops is Boris Soko, who provides security in track four, and has already survived an attempt on his life. Ethnic divides still exist in some neighborhoods in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In a school in Travnik, a fence separates Muslim and Croat pupils. Bosnia’s constitutional court declared the "two schools under one roof policy" unconstitutional in 2012. But this policy is still practiced in everyday life, even though nobody calls it that anymore. It’s not just in schools that the distance between the ethnic groups is visible. The parents also foster ethnic segregation from their neighbors. It’s always been this way - Amela will of course marry a Muslim. The country is home to Bosnian Muslims, Bosnian Croats and Bosnian Serbs. They say they live together but on closer inspection they just live side by side. During the war in Yugoslavia, thousands of Bosnian women were raped and many became pregnant as a result. But their children are even now not recognized as war victims. The NGO "Forgotten Children of War" aims to change that. In Bosnia-Herzegovina, they are known as "Nevidljiva djeca"- "invisible children." Their mothers were raped, by enemy soldiers during the war in Yugoslavia - and sometimes also by UN peacekeepers. The Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences estimates that between 2,000 and 4,000 Bosnian children were born after their mothers had been raped during the war. Often marginalized and stigmatized by society, many of these "invisible children" who are now young adults have led miserable lives. Ajna Jusić is the daughter of a Bosnian Muslim woman who was raped by a Croatian soldier during the conflict. For years she knew nothing of her mother’s ordeal. But now her NGO "Forgotten Children of War" wants to bring these "invisible children" together and give them a voice. Estamos en Sarajevo, la capital de Bosnia i Herzegovina. Todos los que vienen a esta ciudad, pronto se dan cuenta de por qué Sarajevo es considerada la “Jerusalén de Europa”. Bosnia y Herzegovina es un país multiétnico y multirreligioso. La población es en su mayoría bosnia musulmana, serbia ortodoxa y croata católica, aunque también hay comunidades judías y otras minorías religiosas. Pero el doblamiento no es homogéneo, dependiendo en que ciudad estemos, el panorama puede cambiar mucho. Durante siglos, Bosnia y Herzegovina ha sido un lugar de encuentro de diferentes culturas y religiones. La religión ha sido una fuente de identidad y una parte importante de la vida cotidiana para muchas personas en el país. Sin embargo, después de la guerra en Bosnia y Herzegovina (1992-1995), la religión también se ha utilizado para dividir a la población y justificar la violencia étnica. Es por eso que ha habido desde entonces fuertes desplazamientos internos y, en el caso de Sarajevo, los serbios son los que se han marchado. En 1991, los bosnios musulmanes formaban el 45 % de la población, seguidos de los serbios ortodoxos con el 38 % y los croatas católicos con el 7 %. Actualmente, más del 80% de Sarajevo es musulmán Sarajevo está ubicada en una cuenca rodeada de montañas y es conocida por su rico patrimonio cultural e histórico. La ciudad tiene una mezcla de estilos arquitectónicos, incluyendo edificios otomanos, austrohúngaros y modernos. El casco antiguo, conocido como Baščaršija, es una de las principales atracciones turísticas de la ciudad, con sus calles estrechas llenas de tiendas y restaurantes que venden comida tradicional bosnia. En el caso de los alimentos, aquí gastas en promedio 31% menos que en la capital española. La tendencia sigue en otros aspectos como el transporte, cuidado personal y entretenimiento. Pero lo interesante de la ciudad no es su economía, sino que logra transportarnos a otras latitudes que juzgamos más lejanas. The peace agreement that holds together Bosnia-Herzegovina is under threat from a rise in Serb nationalism. More than three years of war in the 1990s devastated Bosnia after the fall of Yugoslavia. Tens of thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands were driven from their homes by ethnic cleansing. The war ended in 1995 with a peace treaty that split the country into two parts: a Bosniak Muslim and Croat federation - and the other a Serb entity called Republika Srpska. Now an ongoing political crisis and the resurgence of Serb nationalism under Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodic, is stirring up fears of renewed conflict. In the wake of Israel's attack on Gaza, various groups advocating for the protection of journalists, have warned that this is the worst time for members of the media on record. One committe says the past three weeks has been the deadliest period for journalists covering war since 1992. The conflict has so far killed at least 31 journalists - most of them Palestinian. Let's go back briefly to the siege of Sarajevo where many journalists lost their lives while simply trying to do their job, report the truth. The lessons learned during the war in Bosnia have led to significant changes on war reporting. But these changes haven't done much to protect journalists. Adama Munu explains. Plus, we interviewed two journalists in Montenegro who reported from Sarajevo during the war. They both lost their colleagues while on assignment. Thirty years later, they are closely watching what's unfolding in Gaza. They say many journalists who covered the war in Bosnia are now on the ground in Gaza, and are working to ensure Palestinians have their voices heard. Mirjana Miladinovic reports from Podgorica. Bosnia-Herzegovina is a place to discover. After two weeks of traveling in the country, I realized that Bosnia-Herzegovina is much more than a former Yugoslav Republic, dating its history back to the 12th century. The combination of overwhelming natural attractions and warm, hospitable people make Bosnia-Herzegovina quite an interesting place to visit and explore. The different religious creeds and social mixture give another point of interest to this country from the cultural and sociologic standpoints. Don’t miss the impressive waterfalls in Jajce and Kravice and enjoy the cosmopolitan ambience of Mostar and Sarajevo. History and modern life; art, religion and culture; you will find it all in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Take your time to enjoy and learn a bit more about this Balkan country, definitely a land of wonders.
