Stories about punk music tend to picture thin-framed white guys and girls with shaved heads, part of an angry, energetic scene born out of the working class angst of young white England in the 1970s. But the actual history of punk – as a type of music and movement – is more complicated than that. Black punks have been an integral and pioneering part of punk history – and they're keeping the movement alive and growing today. Host Sana Saeed explores that history and talks to proto-punk band Death, musician and journalist Greg Tate, the band The 1865 and festival organizer Shawna Shawnté. Punk is more than music: It’s a way of life; it’s a politic; it says something about the world we’ve lived in and the world we want to create. It’s also served as a haven for the misfits, the disillusioned and the marginalized. But the narratives that exist about punk, outside those in the know, treat it as though it was just about angst. Punk is treated as though it’s simply the byproduct of a particular kind of punk: the angry white boy. But the history of punk is a history that intersects across communities building on similar sounds and politics. Few genres have had the lasting impact of punk. 1976 is one of those seismic dividing lines in popular music. A history destroying year zero. The point after which everything changed. It was the year that The Ramones debut was released, the year that the first singles from the UK Punk scene were set loose upon an unprepared public. And while the punks wanted to remove themselves from the past, burn all that had come before, nothing happens within a vacuum. These bands didn't appear out of nowhere with the key principles of the genre locked in place. This innovative minimalist, three-chords and the truth, turbo-powered rebellious music had to have precedent. There were other artists that lead up to this era-defining moment in music that are either forgotten, ignored or not given credit. This is how Punk became punk. #Punk #PunkHistory #MusicDocumentary Fact-checking and Additional Writing by Serenity Autumn. After the news that punk band NOFX would disband in 2023, frontman Fat Mike determined to preserve their musical heritage by opening a museum of the world's first punk rock music. According to Louder, some of the funders for this project came from underground scene elders such as Brett Guerwitz, Pat Smear, Mark Hoppus, Tim Armstrong, skate legend Tony Hawk, to Vans Warped Tour festival founder Kevin Lyman. Unfortunately the only major American punk band to turn down the opportunity to be involved with The Punk Rock Museum was Green Day. "There's a lot of punk rockers, I don't want corporations, just punk rockers and bands. It's funny, there's one band that refuses to take part," said Fat Mike on the Tuna on Toast podcast with host Stryker. When Stryker guessed Green Day, Fat Mike immediately confirmed the answer. Fat Mike himself had even contacted Green Day many times but the results were still negative. Fat Mike had insinuated that there was still a place for Billie Joe Armstrong cs at The Punk Rock Museum. "We'll still give it as a display," said Fat Mike teasingly, "But it will be very small," he added with a smile. Even so, The Punk Rock Museum will still open on January 13, 2023 in Las Vegas, America. The museum will display amazing artifacts such as brochures, photos, clothing, instruments, handwritten lyrics, artwork and almost anything else contributed by the people and bands that were there. Not only that, visitors can also play guitar and bass connected to amplifiers from punk scene leaders such as NOFX, Rise Against, Pennywise, Sick of it All, Strung Out and others. On a Friday evening in late October 1984, mayhem was released on the streets of Tucson by a little know band called Useless Pieces of Shit and their loyal fans. Playing on the sidewalk with fans moshing in the street (that right I said moshing, we were using that term way back then) it was a wild time. The best part was it all aired live on the the local cable television station. Thanks to Charley Brown, who worked at the station, the tapes were saved and edited for this release. Enjoy!
