Bo Burnham's Inside currently streaming on Netflix is one of the best things I've seen all year. It perfectly captures so much of the emotions I think all of us felt in the last 18 months or so... emotions that we probably should keep close since things are going in reverse. However, some parts of Bo Burnham's experimental special were... a bit othering. I realized that as a whole the special wasn't for me. It was a deeply personal piece that spoke explicitly to Bo's experiences and worldview, and as a "straight white male", there's definitely some elements of his worldview that aren't going to look the same from my standpoint. This got me thinking about other works of art with similar themes. I think there's tons of art made by white creators that speak explicitly to a white worldview in a way that isn't explained by just being "for general audiences". I named it "White Liberal Performative Art" and I'm super proud of myself for that lol. In this video I give a little background on what brought me to this idea and how Bo Burnham's Inside works as a proof of concept for it. 00:00 Intro 00:38 Some thoughts on the paradox of blackness 07:05 Who the F is Bo Burnham? 13:00 The Erasure of "Whiteness" from Mainstream Pop Culture 16:15 White Habitus 20:43 Performative Wokeness 25:10 Existential Dread 33:35 Final thoughts featuring Shawn and Mel - 🤍youtube.com/channel/UCBcvxEVmUC5b8eAmdOFVKRA Just Tennile - 🤍youtube.com/c/JustGossipfolks Hollaatjrazy- 🤍youtube.com/c/HollaAtKrazy Song ID Nine One Nine by Sarah the Instrumentalist
YES!!!!!! i love ur channel go off with the new concept!!! as a theoretically situated being with a strong academic background this is what i live for
Bo burnham went to private school growing up so thats another layer added on to his whiteness
This was honestly a great video.
That Old Bitter Millenial Nonsense was Hilarious, I felt that shit 🤣
Bo Burnham exemplifies the modern white phenomenon of self hatred masquerading as awareness and compassion
You're kinda sorta just a little bit of a bigot.
I don’t understand why I can’t want for others what I have.
Why can’t I lose privilege by everyone having it?
Thank you for this.
White liberalism is more dangerous than Trumpism. But that's not a reason to like Trump. Socialism is your friend
This video completely shifted my perspective on our society and white liberal culture as a whole. Thank you, I feel educated lol
personally i choose to remain quiet (keep my opinions to myself) now being a rare exception. the current thinking is that If you remain quiet you are quietly supporting racism BUT if you voice support you are a white knight...the problem with the latter is that it's largely true. most often the people who jump to support do so in a performative disingenuous way. I don't say shit, if my opinion is asked for, i give it, if i someone says racist shit to me i say i am not interested. other than that i don't care, i (like every other human) have my own problems (and beyond my desire for all people to be treated equally and respectfully) i don't have time for other people's. i don't care about race, i resent people saying that i have to care. i will start to care ONLY when it directly effects me OR people i care about. if that makes me a bad person i'm totally fine with being perceived that way because the people who would make that judgement are people i would rather avoid.
Just bought the book. Thank you. As a cis white male I often don't know what to do besides shut up and listen.
Not that this is the point of the video but... Didn't "stan" in the sense of 'obsessive fan' come from Eminem's song "Stan", or was it early 00s black slang before then? I thought the 'stalker-fan' was a retroactive explanation.
Bo Burnham would agree with you 100%.
This video was like a bombshell on my psyche, and it really put into perspective the white fragility that I've felt for so long. Thank you for doing what you do.
Self-hating whites are the biggest source of cringe the modern world has seen
This video really gave me ohh moment.....🔥
